Dr Michelle Tan

Dr Michelle Tan is a senior General and Colorectal specialist Surgeon with a keen interest in benign and malignant conditions of the gut. Her main interest is the early detection, prevention, and treatment of bowel cancer through laparoscopic or “keyhole” surgery. However, she is also well experienced in a wide range of general surgery conditions including laparoscopic hernia repairs, gallbladder surgery and skin cancer surgery.
Dr Tan first completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy (Honors) before pursuing her medical degree. She obtained a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Science degree (MBBS)with Honors at the University of Sydney. She completed her internship and residency at Westmead Hospital and commenced training in general surgery at St George hospital, Sutherland hospital, Bankstown hospital, Prince of Wales hospital and Wollongong hospital.
She became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2016. She then undertook further subspecialty training in colorectal surgery at Wollongong Hospital where she focused on laparoscopic surgery for both malignant and benign conditions of the gut. In addition, she gained valuable experience in transanal minimally invasive surgery or laparoscopy through the anus to remove growths in the rectum. With increased complexity in the management of bowel cancer, Dr Tan’s patients are discussed at a multidisciplinary team meeting comprising of specialist surgeons, oncologists, and radiologists to individualise treatment for cancer patients.
Dr Tan is committed to providing the highest level of specialist surgical care for all her patients. She participates in the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Continuing Professional Development which promotes lifelong learning in alignment with regulatory authority requirements in Australia and New Zealand.
Dr Tan is a member of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and Australian Medical Association. She is also accredited by the Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Society of Australia which ensures that all endoscopic procedures are performed in accordance with professional standards.
